Depression and cardiovascular diseases

Depression is a well-known risk factor for adverse cardiovascular outcomes in patients with cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of depression in patients with cardiovascular diseases has been reported to be approximately 20 %. A two-step depression screening protocol using the 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) and the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) is recommended for patients with cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases and depression share a common pathology, including increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system, hyperactivity of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and inflammation.
